Lower Southampton Schoolyard Habitat#131 Gardening With Kids

Square Foot Gardening
Using our math unit in measurement, students helped to plan the
area to be used for our square foot gardens. An area of 20 feet by 20 feet was
marked off. Students then measured 4x4 foot squares for raised beds. Each 4x4
square will hold 16 individual square foot squares. We hope to have the raised
beds prepared soon.
Walking Trip to Leck's Greenhouses
Third grade students walked to nearby Leck's greenhouses to purchase flowers for our school gardens. We learned about perennials and annuals. We found plants to put in our sunny gardens and plants to put into our shady gardens. We learned about the importance of a frost date. Our frost date is May 15th. That is the date that is usually safe to plant all plants without worrying about the cold nights. We learned we are in the growing zone 6. We had fun on our visit to Leck's Greenhouses. Stop by and visit them. They have beautiful flowers!

This is a painting of our schoolyard habitat. It was painted by four students in grades three and four. The painting was displayed in Washington D.C. at the National Botanic Gardens.
