Classroom Feeder Watch
Students at Lower South have been enjoying a great time learning about the birds that visit our habitat. With the support of our Lower South P.T.A. and Cornell University, our school has been a participant in the
Classroom Feeder Watch Program. Classroom Feeder Watch is a science program for elementary and middle school children, which introduces them to the world of ornithology. The program is presented through 10 exploration activities. Students become active participants in observing, collecting, and recording data about their local birds who visit the selected site. The data is sent to scientists who study bird populations and develop bird conservation programs. The program is inquiry based. The students learn to observe birds and ask questions based on what they observe. They are encouraged to research for an answer. Our school is researching the most common feeder bird at Lower South. This data will be collected and recorded and graphed. It will be analyzed and an answer will be found. Check back in a few weeks for our results. The children become scientists. They are learning to ask questions and look for answers. They are learning to identify birds through field journals and using field marks to help make identifications. They are counting visiting birds at feeder count stations, collecting the data and recording the information on a feeder count sheet. The information is then sent, via the internet, to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, for bird research.
